China: Environmental Disaster

Chinese government economists estimate that environmental pollution last year cost China approximately 10 percent of GDP. Last year, China's economy grew 9.9 percent in real terms, not accounting for environmental externalities. Yes, that's actually a net loss of 0.1 percent of GDP. Is this the end of the Chinese growth miracle?

I assume your math is just for fun...but how about a more serious look at the trade-offs very poor people make for more prosperity? And how people who are 5 times richer than they were 30 years ago may be starting to take pollution more seriously. How does the 10% figure compare with out own?
